Bobbie Gentry
"Mississippi Delta"
Born on her "grandaddy's" farm in Mississippi,
Bobbie Gentry had a string of hits in the late sixties and early seventies
before retiring early. I suppose I could have included any number of
great southern female songwriters but I wanted to focus on lesser-known
but still-influential women. Also, when I listen to this song, I am down
there with her in the murky Mississippi. Besides, I'm completely mystified
by some of the lyrics: "One-ree-o-ree-ee-reeanni Fidderliss-farce-nickory-
john-queery-quan." Huh?
